Nobody Told Us What It Costs Once You Are In

The third one came on Tuesday and you laughed, which surprised you.

Not a good laugh. The other kind, the one that arrives when a thing has become so relentless that it stops being upsetting and starts being almost funny, and you stood in the kitchen with the envelope and made a sound and your partner came in and asked what.

Three unexpected costs in one month. All of them legitimate. None of them anything anybody warned you about.

And what you have been feeling, underneath the arithmetic, is not really about money. It is a specific and quiet humiliation, and it goes something like: everybody else seems to have known.

I want to go straight at that, because it is wrong, and it is the actual injury here.

Nobody told you because nobody tells anybody.

That is not a conspiracy. It is a series of ordinary human reasons stacked on top of each other, and once you see them the humiliation loses its grip.

People who own houses do not talk about the running costs, because it sounds like complaining about a thing they are lucky to have. People who have just bought are embarrassed for exactly the reason you are, and so they say nothing. People who bought a long time ago genuinely cannot remember, because they absorbed those costs gradually over twenty years and they have become invisible household weather.

And everybody involved in selling you the house had no reason at all to itemize what it would cost to keep it.

So there is no register anywhere of what a house actually takes, and every single owner has found out the same way you are finding out, and none of them told the next one.

You are not behind. You are simply in the year when everybody learns it.

Ye know not what shall be on the morrow

There is a line in James about planning, and read plainly it is unexpectedly kind to you.

Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. (James 4:14, King James Version)

Ye know not what shall be on the morrow.

That is normally preached as a warning against arrogance, and it is that. But look at what it establishes as simple fact before it establishes anything else.

You do not know what is coming. Not because you were careless. Because you are a person, and persons do not have that information, and the letter states it as the ordinary condition of being human rather than as a failure in anybody.

Which lands directly on what you have been carrying.

You have been treating your not knowing as a deficiency. As though a more competent version of you would have researched better, asked the right questions, found the list that does not exist, and arrived prepared for a bill you had never heard of.

James says nobody has that. Not the careful ones and not the people at the reunion with the nice kitchen. Ye know not what shall be on the morrow is addressed to everybody, and it is not a rebuke for it.

And notice something the passage does not do. It does not tell them to plan better. The correction in that chapter is not about improving their forecasting. It is about the confidence with which they announced what they would do, and the answer is not a better spreadsheet, it is a different posture.

So there is no version of the last twelve months in which you could have known. That is not a comfort I am offering you. It is the letter's own claim about what a human being is.

You were never able to know what was coming, and not knowing has never once been a deficiency in you. James 4:14 states the not knowing as the ordinary condition of being a person, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a humiliation off somebody standing in a kitchen with an envelope.

The knowledge is not written down

Here is the practical part, and it explains why this will keep happening for about two more years.

There is no document.

You have probably looked for it. Most new owners do, at about month four, when the second surprise arrives. You searched for what a house costs to run, and you found either very general advice or people selling something, and nothing that told you about the specific thing that happened to you this Tuesday.

That is because the knowledge exists almost entirely in people rather than in writing. It is held in the heads of individuals who learned it by having it happen to them, and it is passed on, when it is passed on at all, in fragments, in kitchens, usually after somebody has already been caught out.

So the way you will actually learn what a house costs is not by research. It is by other owners telling you, which requires one of you to say the thing out loud first.

And nobody says it first, for all the reasons above, and that is why the silence is total.

Which means the humiliation you are feeling has a structural cause and not a personal one. You are inside an information gap that everybody maintains by accident, and the only way anybody ever gets out of it is by being the one who mentions it.

The written word makes the not knowing common to everybody rather than particular to anybody, and the Spirit of God is the one present with somebody who has been looking for a list that does not exist.

Write one down and say it to another owner

So here is the assignment, and the second half is the useful part.

Write down one cost you did not expect and tell one other owner about it.

Write it first. On paper, one line. The actual thing, the actual amount, so it exists as information rather than as a feeling.

Then tell one other person who owns a house. Not as a complaint. As information: I did not know about this one.

And notice what will almost certainly happen, because it happens nearly every time.

They will tell you one back.

That is the entire mechanism. The moment one owner says a real number out loud without embarrassment, the other one is released to do the same, and in about four minutes you will both have learned two or three things that neither of you could have found written down anywhere.

And you will notice something else in their voice, which is relief. Because they have been carrying the same quiet feeling that everybody else knew, and you have just demonstrated that they did not.

I am not offering you a budgeting method and I am not going to tell you how to prepare for next year, because the whole point of James is that you cannot fully. What I am telling you is that the isolation is optional and the ignorance is universal, and one conversation dissolves both.

You are able to be the one who says it first, and the ignorance has never once been yours alone. James 4:14 puts the not knowing on everybody without exception, and the Holy Spirit is the one present in four minutes where two people tell each other the truth about their houses.
