The Boiler Went In The First Winter

You read the quote twice and then did the arithmetic a third time anyway.

You knew after the first read. The number was clear and it was not ambiguous and you understood immediately what it meant. And you still went back and did it again, slowly, as though a different answer might be available if you were more careful.

There is not one. You cannot pay it.

Four months in this house. You are still finding out where the light switches are. There are boxes in the back bedroom that have not been opened and probably will not be until spring.

And then, in the second week of a cold snap, the thing that heats the house stopped.

Now here is what I actually want to talk about, and it is not the money, because I do not know your situation and I am not going to pretend I have a solution for it.

I want to talk about the thought you had at about eleven o'clock that night.

You will not have said it to anybody. You may not have fully formed it. But somewhere in there was a small cold question with a shape something like: should we have done this. Or: is this what we get. Or, if you are somebody who prays, a version that was harder to look at directly.

That thought is the subject of this article.

Because a repair bill is a repair bill and it will be dealt with somehow, badly or slowly or with help. But a person who has started to read their own misfortune as a verdict has picked up something that will do considerably more damage over the next ten years than a boiler ever could.

Neither hath this man sinned

There is a moment where the disciples ask exactly your question out loud, and the answer is one of the flattest denials in the Gospels.

Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. (John 9:3, King James Version)

Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents.

Look at what is happening in that scene. They see a man who has been blind from birth, and their question is not whether somebody sinned. Their question is which one. The framework is so settled in them that the only open matter is the identification of the guilty party.

And He does not adjust their framework. He does not say it is more complicated than that, or that we cannot always know, or that we should not speculate.

He denies it outright. Neither. Not him, not them.

That is a direct statement, in scripture, that a person's hardship was not caused by anybody's wrongdoing, in a case where every religious instinct in the room said it must have been.

And I want to be careful with the second half of the verse, because people use it to build a machine, and it is not one. That the works of God should be made manifest in him is a statement about what happened next in that particular story. It is not a general rule that every hardship is a setup for a demonstration, and I am not going to tell you that your boiler is going to become a testimony.

What the verse settles for you is the first half, and that is enough.

The timing means nothing. Nobody is being told anything. The four months and the cold snap and the number on the quote are not a message, and there is no fault of yours being pointed at.

You are not being told anything by this, and hardship has never once been a verdict pointing at somebody's fault. John 9:3 denies the framework outright rather than qualifying it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a cold question off somebody at eleven at night.

Bad timing is what boilers do

Here is the practical part, and it is less spiritual than what came before it, and it is worth as much.

Things break when they are used hardest.

That is not irony and it is not the universe noticing you. A heating system fails in cold weather because cold weather is when it works hardest, and the same is true of everything else in a house. Roofs go in storms. Pipes go in a freeze. Nothing fails in the middle of a mild April when nobody is asking anything of it.

So the timing that feels pointed is not pointed. It is the most ordinary thing in the world and every owner of every house has had it happen.

And there is a second thing, which is about you rather than the boiler.

Four months in, you have no reserve. Not because you were foolish, but because the arrival of the number and the departure of your savings happened in the same two weeks, and everyone who has ever bought a house has been at their thinnest in the first year. That is structural. It is when the risk and the poverty overlap.

Which means: this is the most likely moment in your entire ownership of this house for something expensive to happen, and the least likely moment for you to be able to absorb it, and both of those are arithmetic rather than judgment.

You are in the hardest window there is, and you got there by doing something ordinary.

You are in the window where every owner is thinnest, and the timing has never once been anything but the ordinary shape of the thing. The written word refuses the framework of blame outright, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with somebody standing in a cold kitchen with a piece of paper.

Make one call

So here is the assignment, and it is deliberately not about solving it.

Make one phone call about it today, even if the only thing available is asking a question.

Any call. To somebody who might do it cheaper. To ask whether it can be repaired rather than replaced. To ask whether it can be done in stages. To ask a person who knows about these things what they would do. To a scheme, if there is one where you are, and I do not know whether there is.

One call, today.

And here is why this and not something larger.

You have been carrying it as a single unsolvable block for several days, and an unsolvable block does a specific thing to a person: it stops them acting at all, on anything, because no available action is big enough to touch it. So nothing gets done, and the not doing is itself exhausting, and by the end of the week you are more tired than the problem warrants.

A single call breaks the block into pieces. Not because it solves anything, and it may well change nothing at all today. Because you will end the day as somebody who did one thing about it rather than somebody who thought about it for eleven hours.

That is not a small difference. It is the difference between being acted upon and acting, and it changes what you are like in the house tonight.

You are able to do one thing about it today, and a single call has never once needed to solve anything to be worth making. John 9:3 clears the ground of blame before anything practical begins, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with somebody picking up a phone in a cold house.
